About Ozone Depletion Substances and Refrigerants
The layer of ozone in the stratosphere helps to filter
out ultraviolet (UV) radiation from penetrating to the
Earth’s surface where it destroys protein and DNA molecules.
Without this protective layer of ozone, it is doubtful
whether life could have evolved on Earth at all. Although
there are natural causes of variation in ozone levels,
recent observations have indicated that this layer is
being broken down by the emission of various chemicals
from the Earth, especially chlorine used by the HVAC
industry in refrigerants for refrigeration and air conditioning,
several years ago.
Since 1979, the amount of stratospheric ozone over the
entire globe has fallen for about 4 to 6 per cent per
decade in the mid-latitudes and by 10 to 12 per cent
in higher latitudes. In general penetration of UV-b
radiation increases by 2 per cent for every 1 per cent
decrease in the ozone layer. UV-b radiation is responsible
for several serious negative effects on humans and animals,
mainly related to eyes, skin and immune system.
The USA government requires all individuals who work
directly with controlled refrigerant to be certified.
In USA all persons working and using refrigerants must
be certified by passing a EPA Section 608 examination.
Students for this test can be certified under three
equipment categories plus Universal.
- Type I: A Type I technician primarily works on small
appliances such as domestic refrigerators, window air
conditioners, PTACs and vending machines (a small appliance
is defined by the EPA as a unitary system that contains
less than five pounds of refrigerant charge).
-Type II: A Type II technician primarily works on equipment
using a high pressure refrigerant such as HCFC-22. The
equipment includes residential air conditioners and
heat pumps, supermarket refrigeration and process refrigeration.
(medium-pressure, high-pressure, and very high-pressure)
- Type III: A Type III technician primarily works on
equipment using a low pressure refrigerant such as HCFC-123
or CFC-11. These units are primarily chillers.
- Universal: Any candidate passing all three of these
EPA types is certified as Universal.
To pass any EPA type, a candidate must pass the Core
section of the test plus one of the technician types
listed above. Once Core is passed, it need not be taken
again and it may be used for additional EPA types. A
passing score of 70%, or 18 out of 25 correct, is required
in order to be certified. Each section is graded independently,
so a technician could pass Core, Type I and Type III
and fail Type II. In this case the technician would
be certified as a Type I and Type III technician. Core
must be passed to receive any certification. All sections
must be passed in order to achieve Universal Technician
status.
